What Is A Legacy Scholarship?
Perhaps the memory of your mother warrants a living legacy. Legacy Scholarship opportunities beginning at $1,000 are available to individuals to honor a mother or father, a special aunt, parents, a special instructor in college, a Sunday School teacher, or some other special individual. Groups such as scouts, choirs, missionaries, or men/women’s groups may also start such scholarships in honor of a special member or leader, as was done by members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority at Alfred Street. Legacy Scholarships offer a special opportunity to fund the college education of a local needy student who has achieved against the odds, while also honoring the memory of your loved one in perpetuity.

What is the relationship between the Alfred Street Baptist Church and the Alfred Street Foundation?
The Foundation is a separate 501 (c) (3) public charity organization created by the church but subject to IRS oversight.

Is the church the primary sourch of funding for the foundation?
The church provided the initial start-up capital, but the Foundation seeks to remain self-sustaining with contributions from, and service to the general public. College scholarships for deserving students are our main focus.

How are scholarship recipients selected?
The students are selected based on financial need criteria as defined by the US Department of Education. Under these criteria, the income of parents is a major factor.

Are the scholarships only for students attending Alfred Street Baptist Church?
No. As we are a public charity, our IRS filing specifically requires that all scholarships be open to the general public, and be competitively awarded.

How can I set up a scholarship named for a special loved one?
The Foundation will open a special account for you named for, or in honor of special individuals. Legacy Scholarships awarded thus far range from $1000 (minimum dollar amount) to $10,000.

If I don't have that much to give what are my options?
You may make a donation of any amount to the Foundation’s general fund. Money from the general fund goes to the Millennium Scholarships for $20,000 each.
