ASBC Foundation Legacy Scholarships
During 2007, the ASBC Foundation initiated Legacy Scholarships, named for and funded by individual donors. The amount of these scholarships varied from $2,500 up to $10,000, depending donor wishes. Donors may also specify the selection criteria (e.g., girls in Math) for the scholarship recipients. Additional Legacy Scholarships be started beginning at $1,000. Legacy Scholarships to date include:
- The JH Green Legacy Scholarship is named for Jacqueline LaMarr Henry-Green, the beloved director of ASBC’s Senior Choir for 47 years. Her dedication to music education spanned 70 years. Mrs. Green donated her entire estate to the ASBC Foundation and the JH Green Legacy Scholarships are funded from proceeds of her estate.
- The Faye S. Gunn Legacy Scholarship is named for Rev. Dr. Faye S. Gunn and was initially funded by over 100 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc. who attend ASBC. Rev. Gunn was the second female ordained to the Christian ministry at ASBC and served as the Interim Pastor of ASBC for over a year starting in January, 2007. She is a former educator in the local public schools.
- The Robertson Legacy Scholarships are funded by The Robertson Family Foundation, a private foundation started by the Robertson Family to fund various charitable causes. Four (4) college scholarships were funded by this family in 2007 through the ASBC Foundation.
- The Mobley-Wallace Legacy Scholarship is named for Elsie Mobley and Addie Wallace (both of NC), the beloved mothers of two of ASBC’s deacons. The scholarship was started as a tribute to these special mothers, both of whom stressed educational achievement among their children.
- The Davis Legacy Scholarship is named for Ms. Vance Davis, who has a strong interest in promoting Historically Black Colleges and Universities(HBCUs). Ms. Davis has served for the past several years as the chairperson for the HBCU College Fair at Alfred Street Baptist Church. The Fair attracts over 1,200 students from across the nation, who seek admission to one of the 35 HBCUs that attend the Fair. Ms. Davis of Suffolk, VA attended Norfolk State University.
- The Kimberly R. Paige Legacy Scholarship was started by Ms. Syrinda Paige to honor the memory and legacy of her sister, Kimberly. Kimberly Paige of Halifax, VA attended college at the University of Virginia (UVA) where she majored in English. She subsequently pursued a very successful career as a financial planner. Kimberly had an enduring affection for UVA and a passion for her profession as a financial planner. This Legacy Scholarship in her memory supports female business majors at UVA.
