The John O. Peterson (JOP) Library honors Dr. John Otis Peterson, Sr. (1934-2011), the 7th pastor of Alfred Street Baptist Church. The mission of the JOP Library is to provide resources that support church ministries as well as discipleship, fellowship and worship for church members. The Library is located behind the Choir Loft in Room 203. The JOP Library Team is available to assist church members, ministries, committees, and staff with any reference or research questions.
Envisioned by Dr. Peterson and organized by Walter J. and Curtis D. Howard, Ph.D., the JOP Library was dedicated on September 2, 2001 during the ASBC Homecoming Service. Dr. Curtis Howard was the first director and served in that capacity until January 2012. The Library has an inventory of nearly 3,000 print and audio-visual materials for adults and children, including commentaries, books on prayer and daily devotions, biblical reference sources, religious history, African American history and culture, grief, marriage, divorce, parenting, money management, sermon CDs and DVDs as well as resources covering additional topics.
The Library is open on Sundays after 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services; Mondays, 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. when the Tutorial Ministry is in session (October through June); and by appointment.
