A Baptist View on the Imposition of Ashes

Ash Wednesday marks the official beginning of the season of Lent. On this day, Christians all over the world receive a mark of ashes on their foreheads as an outward sign of an inward confession. Four year ago, I shared my vision that this congregation participate in the distribution, or imposition of ashes to mark this occasion. Is there a bag policy at the venue?

Yes, EagleBank Arena encourages guests to not bring a bag, in order to help enhance the contactless experience. If you require a bag for your personal belongings, EagleBank Arena has adopted a clear bag policy and must adhere to the following:

Clear Bag:

  • Bag must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC with no obscured inside pockets
  • Bag must not exceed 12ā€x12ā€x6ā€
  • Bag may be 1-gallon plastic zip lock style bag

Clutch Style Bag or Purse:

  • Non-clear clutch style bag or purse must not exceed 5ā€x7ā€

Small Medical and/or Parenting Bags

  • Will be permitted on a case-by-case basis and will be subject to increased security screening.

What are the security procedures at EagleBank Arena?

  • All guests and their belongings are subject to search prior to entry
  • Staff will visually conduct bag and metal detection inspections to detect prohibited items to ensure the safety of all guests
  • Any guest who declines to be searched or is in possession of prohibited items may be denied entry
  • EagleBank Arena also recommends the following tips to help expedite entry into the venue:
    • Guests are encouraged to arrive early
    • Please follow staff directions of our event staff on which items need to be removed or divested prior to passing through magnetometers
    • Guest who have health conditions which prohibit them from passing through magnetometers may flag an event supervisor for a manual screening

What items are prohibited at the venue?

EagleBank Arena Management reserves the right to refuse items deemed unsafe, inappropriate or that violate other arena policies. Prohibited items cannot be checked or stored inside the arena. PLEASE NOTE: Prohibited items lists may be modified in connection with specific events. Prohibited items at EagleBank Arena include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Weapons (guns, knives, chains, spiked bracelets, brass knuckles, tasers, mace/pepper spray)
  • Balloons
  • Fireworks
  • Cans, bottles, or coolers
  • Glass or ceramic containers of any kind
  • Outside food and beverages
  • Metal or glass reusable water bottles
    Illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia
  • Laser pointers/pens
  • Video and audio recording devices (except cell phones and small point & shoot cameras)
  • Professional photography equipment (includes camera with a detachable lens) or GoPros
  • Monopods, tripods, selfie sticks or poles
  • Laptops or tablets of any kind
  • Noisemakers such as air horns, sirens, kazoos, whistles, drums, etc.
  • Animals (Except service animals. Emotional support animals will not be permitted entry.)
  • Luggage
  • Silly string
  • Wrapped gifts or packages
  • Non‐collapsible umbrellas
  • Drones
  • Skateboards, Rollerblades, and Hoverboards
  • Un‐approved pamphlets, handouts, ads, etc.
  • Any other item deemed inappropriate by EagleBank Arena Management

Do I have to pay for parking?

No, there is ample parking at the venue. Once on campus, follow the signs as well as directions from police and local traffic marshals. There is accessible parking for patrons with disabilities adjacent to the South Entry.

What is the best way to get to EagleBank Arena?

EagleBank Arena is located on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, six miles West of the Capital Beltway, just off Braddock Road, Route 620.

From the Capital Beltway
From the beltway, I-495, take exit # 54A (Braddock Road) and proceed West on Braddock six miles to George Mason University on the right-hand side.

From I-66 and points West
From Interstate 66, take exit # 55 onto the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100). Proceed South on the Parkway (toward Springfield) to the Braddock Road exit. Go East (left) on Braddock Road approximately two miles to a left on Roanoke River Lane onto the campus. Alternatively, you may take Exit # 60 (Route 123 – Chain Bridge Road) South toward Fairfax approximately three miles. Turn left on Braddock Road and left at first light on Roanoke River Lane and onto the campus.

From I-95 and points South
From Richmond or Fredericksburg, take Exit # 160, Route 123 North. Proceed approximately 12 miles to a right on Braddock Road at University Mall. Take the next left at Roanoke River Lane and onto the campus.

Public Transportation Options for EagleBank Arena
The arena is indirectly accessible through public transportation. Take Metro’s Orange line train to the Vienna station. From there you have a few options:

You can take the CUE bus from the station to George Mason University. The CUE bus stop is on the opposite side of campus from EagleBank Arena, but it is a quick 5-10 minute walk across campus following the signs to the arena. Lastly you can always take a cab or ride share from the Vienna station to EagleBank Arena. This is probably the costliest option, but possibly the quickest. It is easy to find a cab at the Metro station to get to the arena, but you will have to make arrangements for the return trip.

What happens if I get sick at the event?

A medical team and EMTs will be on-site.

What if I can’t attend… can I watch online?

Yes, you certainly may! We will LIVE STREAM the worship services on our YouTube channel at 11am ET.

Will I be able to pay my tithes or contributions in person?

Unfortunately, no; please be sure to pay your tithes, offerings or donations via text, online or mail your check prior to your arrival.

How long will this service last?

It should last about 2 hours and be over around 1pm ET.
